The annual dental mission of the Caring Hearts Dentistry Society (CHDS) with the cooperation of Rotary World Help happened last February 9-18 in Panglao Cultural Center in Bohol.

This year’s theme “CHDS Healthy Teeth…Happy Smiles” was dubbed a success after performing about 3,200 procedures for eight (8) days. Residents of Bohol have approximately received C$50,000.00 or 1.7 million pesos worth of dental services through this project.

The group performed both preventive and operative dentistry, exodontias (tooth extractions) and pediatric dentistry services.

CHDS saw the need to help and perform this mission as dental caries (decay) and periodontal (gum) diseases are the “two most widespread diseases worldwide,” and dental infections are often painful and occasionally may be life-threatening.

To push for such a big cause, the CHDS had purchased several portable periodontal scalers, portable dental delivery units along with suction machine; they also incorporated a variety of portable dental units, compressors, generators, dental chairs, and other equipment to make this mission a success.

Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines, his Excellency Neil Reeder, together with his wife Madame Irene, also attended the said event and facilitated the turnover of donated goods. The Rotary World Help distributed Tim Horton shirts, clothing from Edgewater Casino, adult and kid’s multivitamins, big bottles of antiseptic liquid soaps, adult diapers, anti-bacterial wipes to the residents of Panglao. Office and school supplies like desktop computer sets, books, dictionaries and other stuff like: sewing machines, hundreds of CAP’s bicycles, incubators, various hospital equipment and supplies were also given.

CHDS also facilitated a program to lecture on the importance of dental health and proper dental care to the elementary and high school students of the local. Toothbrush and floss were then distributed to the attendees.

Moreover, 500 children benefited from the society’s feeding program held in a fishing village in the said place. Packed meals were distributed and served, some of which were: hotdog sandwiches, fried chicken with rice, orange juice and ice cream.

The eight day dental mission was made possible with the help of the 53rd Engineer Brigade of Philippine Army, Air Force of the Philippines (AFP)’s dental service, local counterparts of Tagbilaran Provincial Dental Unit and volunteers from the said island.

Caring Hearts Dentistry Society is a non-profit society and is self-funded with a mission to strive for, attain and deliver the highest level of free dental care to the needy and less fortunate that has little or no access to dental healthcare.
